The provisional A level results for 2009 were published today. The overall figure for languages has hardly changed since 2008. In England there were 32541 awards in total (compared to 32615 in 2008 – a difference of 74) Underlying these figures however there is a continuing drop in German (- 450) and French (-440) and a rise in Spanish (+262) and in particular “Other Languages” (up by 554 or 7.7%). These figures are in line with expectations given the size of the cohort now continuing with languages. The picture at AS is slightly more encouraging, as there was a net rise in the number of awards (from 40,015 to 40,337) Spanish entries at AS increased by over 5% to 8784. Performance at A level continues to improve , In French for example 38.6% of candidates achieved an A Grade and 84.4% A-C. |
